Exploring the world of shooting sports through a wheelchair.

I started my journey in competitive shooting after attending the Adaptive Defensive Shooting Summit in Epping, New Hampshire thanks to a grant from BattleBuddy 3 Gun. The confidence that experience gave me has been crucial to my exploration of other disciplines.

Learned a ton this week in my Paratrap debut. Was feeling great in practice and managed to pick up a few targets over my last try at this game a year ago. First day of competition I was smacked in the face with inexperience, questionable gun fit, and heat fatigue. The next day of competition was more of the same and also lead to an underwhelming performance. However, this time the disparity to the top of the field was a lot closer so I imagine I wasn’t the only one feeling the heat wave. I fell short of my goal of averaging 12 targets per round and didn’t make it into the mixed finals but I’m proud of the result nonetheless. We made this work with no coaches, a lot of determination, the support of my wife, and a grant to help make this effort possible.

This weekend started off strong with a win at Gateway Games. 🥇While I definitely didn’t shoot my best and it had been since before I broke my legs in November that I’ve even shot an Air Rifle, we came out on top through consistency. Sunday I attended the awards at the Track & Field event where I was told one of the athletes that I coach was going to receive an award. I didn’t ask too many questions and just went where I was told only to be surprised by being awarded The Hartford’s Human Achievement Award. This all weighs really heavy as today is my 4th Spinalversary and I can’t thank everyone enough for the help and support along the way.

This past week, I shot 400 rounds between League Night in Sparta and the Multi-State Shoot at Brittany Shooting Park in Bunker Hill, Illinois — all part of my preparation for the Paratrap World Cup this June.

Unfortunately, after one of the best training weeks I’ve had, my shotgun stock cracked.

Now, just a few months away from one of the biggest competitions of my career, I’m facing an unexpected decision:
• Try to repair
• Pursue a custom stock
• Or invest in a new shotgun altogether

Chasing a Paralympic dream was never supposed to be easy, especially without any sponsors. Challenges like these are part of the climb. I’m committed to finding a way forward — one target at a time.

Many of our athletes aspire to take in our Gateway Games as a qualifier for @moveunited nationals. Our program is very entry level and a great gateway for some athletes to enter the process to qualify for the @paralympics. #uhhhhh #airrifle

We’ll see if the 360 cam could catch anything. Until then you get this photo, talked Doebert into shooting clays for the first time in a Black Light 5 Stand match with a Mossberg 500 with a door breacher choke. He managed to hit 9/50! I was scored 6/50 but I’m pretty sure I had 8. Oh well. It was an absolute blast of an event.

Got some questions on how my holster mount setup works. The modularity within the QLS ecosystem is pretty high. It’s pretty easy to find a holster maker that makes something for the QLS system so I’ve yet to run into any issues. If you want the adpter, feel free to DM me and I’ll send you the print file.

One of the reasons I love Thursday night IDPA’s is because it gives me something I can still do with my friends. Hanging around waiting for your turn has a lot of the same feeling, conversations, and general goofiness the staging lanes at the track used to give me. You can make new friends and sometimes really old friends come out of the woodwork to compete with you and everyone is pushing everyone to do their best. I’ll never get over how grateful I am to compete as an equal even if I do it with quite the handicap. Thank all of you for always making me feel like one of the boys and not the sad cripple in the corner. 📸: @redacted.images

Shot my first 2gun match last night. Was an incredible experience. Shot well considering like last week, I went weak arm unsupported for a majority of the pistol targets. Moving and shooting is a different beast in a wheelchair. I have to watch how everyone shoots a stage then figure out how to make it work for me. Eventually I’ll be dangerously ambidextrous with a pistol once I get my non dominant splits down a bit. Moving with a rifle is a learning curve to not break the 180 but not impossible. Went to the Grand American today to try some shotties back to back. Drove down solo and met a friend, didn’t take any media. Went 18/25 with a Citori Trap and 19/25 with a Silver Pigeon 1 Sporting. I think I have it narrowed down to what I’m going to pursue. Also keeping in mind I hopped right into a game with the Citori with no warm up and I missed the first two getting into the grove. Big thanks to Winchester for the ammo, Browning, and Beretta for using your shot guns. They were all fantastic.

Started off decent then had a procedural error as I forgot to engage one target before I left the table. (Technically was still seated though 😂) I ended up switching to left handed shooting halfway through the stage as some targets were deep around the corner and am only allowed to hang my chair around the corner so much. While most people seem to struggle with this I feel comfortable doing it, even if my splits are slow. A major plus is though I had a light primer strike while shooting left handed unsupported at the end and was impressed with my tap rack bang with my off hand. More importantly, even though I struggled with the course due to my own physical inabilities, I had a lot of fun and was happy to be back even if it was in the powerchair.

Inspired by @marcusedc, I thought it was time to rethink my EDC. One of my favorite things about EDC is that it’s always evolving. As a wheelchair user my style is going to be different than most and to be honest I could probably carry a lot more as unnecessary as it could be. Wanting to keep it more simple and focus on purpose, I traded out the bungee cord for the Coloplast hook. It takes up less space and folds flatter. I also recently picked up a surefire stiletto so it’s been added to the rotation. Also haven taken a stop the bleed last year at the Sig Academy, the tourniquet was added. My thought is even if I can’t use it, I can talk someone through it if the scenario allows.

One of the many reasons I’ve come to love shooting post wheelchair is the people. I started shooting IDPA for the challenge last year to move and shoot. I had a print to mount my holster to my chair via a ram ball and safariland qls systems. One of the people I shoot with saw I was having trouble breaking my prints and offered to print it in carbon. Already I can tell it just holds better. The carbon ball doesn’t slip in the ram clamp. This is your reminder to get out, shoot, make friends. I can’t thank strangers enough for becoming friends in this hobby. #idpa #adaptiveshooting #glock

First time shooting from the manual chair since @adaptive_shooting_summit last year. Shook some cobwebs off and learned a few things especially as this was my first and probably worst run of the night minus a malfunction. Moving and shooting is so different between the two chairs. My biggest two take aways is that floor is gross, I’m very thankful for gloves and lead wipes. I’m also glad I practice dry firing for both target acquisition and reholstering quickly and safely as I have to push in the chair and doing so with a gun in your hand is frowned upon.
